Master Tung Ching Chang (1916-1975) has been referred to as the most important and greatest acupuncturist in the history of Chinese medicine. Master Tung Ching Tang, simply recognized as Master Tung, was born into a family of traditional Chinese medical practitioners whose history traces back thousands of years to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE) in Shandong, China.
Tung acupuncture is known for its unique acupuncture points, but those unique acupuncture points are only part of a larger whole. Tung’s acupuncture is a complete system with unique channels, unique acupuncture points (although some points are similar to TCM points), diagnostic methods, and insertion techniques. Furthermore, Tung’s acupuncture is based on a 5 Zhang (6 fu) channel system that is unique to Tung’s system, unlike traditional 14-channel acupuncture. However, the five-channel system is largely obscured in Tung’s acupuncture literature, and is therefore less well known. Fortunately, two of his previously unpublished documents clearly show how Master Tung used this channel system to diagnose and treat disease.
