Nomenclature:

Fu: abdomen Ai: pain
Fuai is food for treating abdominal pain.
Point: SP-16
Chinese Name: 腹哀
English Name/Meaning: Abdomen Sorrow
Pinyin: fù āi
Han Geul 한글: bok ae 복애
Romaji: fuku ai
Vietnamese: Phúc ai

Location:

On the abdomen, in the depression at the lateral border of the rectus abdominis muscle, 3 cun superior to Daheng(SP15).
OR
4 cun lateral to the center of the umbilicus lateral to rectus abdominis muscle.

Functions of fuai:

  • Regulates Qi in the Intestines.
  • Drains Dampness.

Indications:

Abdominal pain, dry dampness, indigestion, loss of appetite.

Method:

Perpendicular insertion, 0.5 to 1 cun.

Remarks:

Meeting point with the yin wei vessel.

Precautions:

  • In thin patients, deep needling may penetrate the peritoneal cavity.
  • Deep needling at this point may penetrate an enlarged spleen.
