Nomenclature:

Tian: heaven              Chi: Pool
Tianchi is lateral to the breast and milk secreted from the breast is as if coming from a heavenly pool.

Name:Tianchi

Pinyin:tiān chí
Han Geul 한글: cheon ji 천지
Romaji:ten chi
Vietnamese: Thiên trì

Location :

1 cun lateral, 5 cun lateral to the anterior midline and slightly superior to the nipple, in the 4th intercostal space.

Functions :

  • Opens chest and regulates qi.
  • Sedates cough and stops wheezing.
  • Spreads Lung qi.

Indications of Tianchi:

  • Tianchi is beneficial for various manifestations of inversion qi (chaotic and rebellious qi), in this case affecting the Lung (uprising qi, cough etc.), head (headache), sense organs (blurred vision) and neck region (scrofula).
  • Also good for discomfort sensation in the chest, pain in the hypochondriac region, swelling and pain of the axillary region.

Method :

Transverse-oblique insertion posteriorly along the inter-costal space, 0.5 to 1 cun.

Precautions :

Deep needling is not advisable as it may cause pneumothorax.
