Nomenclature:

Tian: Heaven Shu: Pivot
The region above the navel is considered as the heaven pertaining to Yang and the region below is the earth, pertaining to yin. The point is on the level with the navel, like a pivot between heaven and earth.

Location:

2 cun lateral to the centre of the umbilicus.

Functions:

  • Regulates and promotes the function of intestines.
  • Relieves food accumulation.
  • Supports the earth and transforms damp.
  • Clears stomach heat and large intestine heat.

Indications of Tianshu:

  • The main point for the diseases of the intestines, such as abdominal pain, abdominal distension, borborygmus, diarrhea, constipation, dysentery, intestinal abscess.
  • This point helps for the movement of qi and blood so is used for Irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea.
  • Drain dampness – urinary system problems, edema, cloudy urine, late stage of Liver cirrhosis –water retention, reduced appetite, bloating, edema (weight control).

Method:

Puncture perpendicularly. The needle tip may be slightly in the direction of the middle 0.8-1.2 cun.

Remarks:

  • Front-Mu Point of the Large Intestine.
  • Main point for antidysentery.
  • Good for Irritable bowel syndrome and Chron’s disease (Use along with ST36) .

Precaution:

  • In thin subjects, deep needling may penetrate the peritoneal cavity.
  • Donot use in pregnant women with 3 month or over.
