Jianwaishu is on the shoulder, slightly lateral to the vertebral border of the scapula.

Location:
3 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of first thoracic vertebrae where Taoduo (DU 13) is located.
Functions and Indications of Jianwaishu:
Benefits the sinews and reduces pain so is beneficial for pain in scapular region, numbness and aching of the upper extremities, motor impairment of the shoulder and arm.
Method:
Oblique medial insertion 0.5 to 1 cun.
Remarks:
Trigger point on the levator scapulae muscle
Precautions:
Perpendicular insertion, especially in thin patients, carries a substantial risk of inducing a pneumothorax.
